Month-long delays for 12 week scans, not enough consultants and lack of privacy were also highlighted by health inspectors. More than 30 pregnant women in just one month waited four hours or longer to be seen by maternity medics at Leicester Royal Infirmary. All of the women were seeking help because they were worried about themselves or their unborn child. Staff at the maternity assessment unit MAU at the infirmary became so concerned about the fact that women were waiting for so long that they started a long-wait log. The log showed that in April of this year, 33 patients waited for more than four hours to be seen in the department. The reasons on other occasions were not recorded. The unit is the first port of call for women who think they might be in labour or have any concerns during pregnancy.
